Biography
William W. Hoyt
Bill was born near the Texas Gulf Coast . He spent a lot of time on the coast as a child. Bill was able to take a number of trips on the "Gulf Breeze" a cabin cruiser, that was berthed in Kemah, Texas and was owned by Howard Hughes and the Hughes Tool Company. Some of his summers were spent on his uncle Noah Dietrich's 53’ boat, "The Blue Moon", in places like Catalina Island and Balboa. This experience gave Hoyt a great love of the sea.
Shirt cardboard that use to come in his dad’s cleaning provided his first canvas for his art work. During his child hood his father was in the advertising business. Bill use to love going to visit the art department, at his father’s company. One of the artists was Mark Storm, who illustrated the Texas Braggs books. Mark would show Bill drawing techniques, which helped develop his love of art.
Hoyt majored in art at the University of Dallas . He graduated with a BA Degree. Bill has studied sculpture with Heri Bartsch, Martin Delabano, and Rick Maxwell.
His love of the sea was the motivation for Bill to spend six years in the United States Coast Guard for his military service. Galveston was home to Bill and his wife Sandy during that time.
In 1986 Bill was finally able to use art as a way of earning a living after spending twenty-two years in sales and marketing. Hoyt opened his first of two art galleries and custom frame shops. Bill turned his business over to his son, Brian, in 2004. Now Bill can devote more time to his own art work.
In the last few years Bill has been able to enter several competitions and has been able to receive several awards for his art.
Bill and his wife Sandy, have been together since they were 15 years old. They were married 1 week out of high school. They divide their time between their home in Dallas where 5 of their 6 children live and with their youngest daughter in a cabin in Western Colorado. Bill and Sandy have deep ties to Colorado. Bill's father was born in the Gilpin Hotel in Blackhawk, Colorado, which was owned and operated by Bill's great grandparents at that time. Colorado and his native Texas are a great source of insiration and subject matter for Bill's art.
